Zhengzhou University (ZZU in short) is admitted into Project 211, the Midwest Universities Comprehensive Strength Promotion Project, and the Joint Constructive Project co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the People¡¯s Government of Henan Province. Of the overall area of 5,700 mu, ZZU is composed of four campuses, i.e. the main campus (No.100 Kexue Road, Zhengzhou city), the south campus (No.75 Daxue North Road, Zhengzhou city), the north campus (No. 97 Wenhua Road, Zhengzhou city), and the east campus (Daxue North Road, Zhengzhou city). ZZU enrolls in China over 56,000 full-time undergraduates and 15,000 full-time postgraduates, as well as in 60 oversea countries and regions more than 1,600 international students.
Medical education of ZZU dates back to National Fifth Sun Zhongshan University built in 1928(the predecessor of National Henan University founded in 1942). This national university moved into Zhengzhou in 1952 and established Henan Medical College (the first batch authorized to confer doctoral degrees) which was the forerunning of the higher medical education in Henan province. The precedent Zhengzhou University, the first comprehensive university established by the State in 1956, was admitted into Project 211 in 1996. Zhengzhou Industrial University, a national key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Chemical Industry of China, was founded in 1963. Educationalist, historian and philosopher Ji Wenfu, physicis Huo Bingquan, chemist Hou Debant, professor Zhong Xiangchong expert in refractory, the member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, professor Sun Guoliang expert in civil engineering, professor Dong Guomin expert in otolaryngology, professor Shen Qiong, the founder of the esophageal cytology, as well as professor Su Shouzhi expert in the human parasitology, all either taught or held offices in this university. On July 10, 2000, ZZU was established by merging three separate universities: the precedent Zhengzhou University (the precedent ZZU), Zhengzhou University of Technology (ZZUT) and Henan Medical University (HMU).
Long history cultivates distinctive culture of ZZU. Influenced by abundant culture in the Central Plains of China, members of ZZU have the fine quality of tolerance and greatness. ZZU has the students not only from 30 provinces and autonomous regions in China, but also over 60 oversea countries and regions in the world. Thus in ZZU different cultures blend with one another to improve the integration of and communication among regions, ethnics and cultures. ZZU set up 12 disciplines with balanced development separately belonging to Arts, Science, Engineering and Medicine, which complement each other. Inheriting and developing the long distinctive culture, feature cultures of three campuses of ZZU have accumulated to show the school ethos, that is ¡°Persistence and Sincerity, Prudence and Assiduousness¡±. Strengthening the self-culture construction, simultaneously ZZU focuses on its responsibility for cultural guidance and the contributions to improve the economic development in the native region.
ZZU has developed into a comprehensive university in 15 years on base of merging the three separate universities. ZZU ensures the balanced development 12 fields of study: science, engineering, medicine, literature, history, philosophy, law, economics, management science, pedagogy, agriculture and arts. Especially ZZU comprises 6 national key disciplines (including the breeding ones): condensed matter physics, materials processing engineering, history of ancient China, organic chemistry, chemical technology, pathology and pathophysiology. 4 disciplines (or fields) have ranked top 1% in ESI all the global, i.e. chemistry, clinical medicine, materials science and engineering. 21 first-level disciplines are authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 3 independent second-level disciplines to confer doctoral degrees, 55 first-level disciplines to confer master degrees. 1 program is offered for professional doctoral degrees, 21 programs for professional masters¡¯ degrees, as well as 23 post-doctoral exchange centers.
Professor HuoYuping, professor Wu Yangjie, professor Shen Changyu, and professor Matti (non-Chinese nationality) are members of the Chinese Academy of Science, while professor Liu Jiongtian, professor Yang Shengli, professor Wang Fuming are members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. 5 talents are elected into the national ¡°1000-talent Plan¡±, 2 talents Chang Jiang Scholars Program, and 7 talents acquiring the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. At present, professor He Jilin, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, assumes the presidency of the resource and industrial material technology research institute in Henan province. And Professor Nick Lemoine, Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences is the Dean of the Academy of Medical Sciences in Zhengzhou University. What¡¯s more, professor Nan Zhengzhong, professor Zhang Hai and professor Er Yuehe also teach in the school.
ZZU implements morality education and backs up with a sound talent nurturing system. 108 programs for bachelors¡¯ degrees have been offered in the main campus. The schools in main campus and the International School in the south campus enroll the students whose scores are equal to or more than the key Chinese university cut-off points in College Entrance Examination, while Software and Applied Science &Technology School in the north campus enrolls those whose scores are less than the key Chinese university cut-off points but equal to or more than the ordinary Chinese university cut-off points. ZZU has been admitted into the training program of excellence in engineers, law and physician education successively. Journalism and Communication School was jointly established by the Publicity Department of Henan and ZZU to raise outstanding journalism talents. ZZU comprises 14 National Characteristic Specialties, 5 National Exemplary Teaching Centers, 6 National Comprehensive Reform Pilot Projects for Undergraduate, 3 National Comprehensive Reform Pilot Projects of Professional Degree Education, 2 National Creative Experimental Zones for Talent Nurturing, 7 National Engineering Practice and Education Centers, 1 National Science Base for Research and Training Teaching Personnel, and 1 National Culture Education Base for College Student.
In addition, ZZU offers 14 National High-level Courses, 2 National Bilingual Exemplary Courses, 4 National Excellent Video Demonstration Lessons, as well as 14 National Shared Exquisite Courses. ZZU has 4 National Teaching Teams and 5 National Teaching Masters. ZZU has won 9 prestigious national awards. ZZU has provided the sound infrastructure and favorable school-running conditions to the students, among which500 thousand graduates have made important contributions to the social and national development.
ZZU adheres to the scientific and technology innovation, and drives social development by service innovation. ZZU now holds many scientific research institutions: ZZU now holds the National Rubber-moulded Engineering Research Center, the National Technology Research Promotion Center of Fused Calcium-magnesium Phosphate, the National Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of Detection and Repairing Major Infrastructure, the National Research Center for Safety and Evaluation of Drugs, and the Collaborative Innovation Centers of National Territorial Sovereignty and Maritime Interests.
ZZU built 2 National Research Base for Clinical Practice of Medicine, and the Training Base of the State Intellectual Property. The key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, the engineering research center and the key research base for the study of humanities and social sciences come to 6. 7 provincial collaborative innovation centers of materials, source and other subject are also built in ZZU.
ZZU has many school-level institutes: the Academy of Medicine, the Pharmaceutical Research Institute, Henan Industrial Technology Research Institute of Materials and Resources, Test and Computer center and so on.
In recent years, ZZU has undertaken over 100 projects: National Key Special Projects, National Program 973, Project 863, Decision Dependent on Science and Technology Plan and so on. Meanwhile, the school has acquired over 1600 the National Natural Science Foundation and the National Social Science Foundation. The National Technological Invention Ward and the National Nature Science Award as well as 5 National Scientific and Technological Progress Awards have been approved. The university has 7 publications in Science and Nature. In 2015, 35 projects are supported by National Social Science Foundation (including 1 major project and 5 key projects), and 214 projects supported by National Natural Science Fund (including 2 key projects).
ZZU holds on open education, widely international exchange and university-industry cooperation. ZZU has founded the International Joint Research Center of Micro-nano Molding Technology, as well as the International Joint Research Center of Cellular and Gene Therapy. ZZU has also established intercollegiate cooperative relationship with nearly 180 universities in more than 40 countries, mainly the United States, the United Kingdom, etc, and made Sino-foreign cooperation in education with Monash University of Australia, University of Wollongong, Warsaw University, University of Lodz, etc. And it also built international exchange mechanisms with Portland State University, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and University of Duisburg-Essen. Every year ZZU receives more than 1000 visitors, and simultaneously sends hundreds of teachers and students to visit and study in foreign countries. ZZU has also set up Confucius Institutes in India. More than 1300 students each year have been recommended for admission to Beijing University, Tsinghua University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc.
ZZU has initially established the National University Science Park in Henan province. The local government has cooperated with more than 200 well-known enterprises in the form of school-enterprise and school-government. 9 hospitals affiliated with ZZU have increased sickbeds to 20,000 and the annual total outpatient visits reached 10,000,000. Zhengzhou New Cape Electronics Co., LTD, listing in 2011, has in top 2nd in the fellow companies. The annual output value of ZZU Comprehensive Design and Research Institute Co., LTD. has reached 240 million yuan, as the leading enterprise and the service brand of ZZU.
In 2015 ZZU enacted the school regulations firstly and has implemented regulations from then on. The school made orientation to a comprehensive and research-oriented university. ZZU adheres to the main line of ¡°One University in a Province¡± and the key points of collaborative innovation to accelerate both the transition development and connotation construction. ZZU improves its education quality and schooling level. Meanwhile, ZZU also made the Comprehensive Reform Policy 4231. In accordance with the key instruction of Premier Li Keqiang, ZZU strives to build the National first-class university, the talent center in Central China, the scientific research base, the exchanges and cooperation center. ZZU should focus on building first-class discipline and first-class university, as well as making contributes to the overall well-off society, the rise of Central China and great rejuvenation of China.
