Zhengzhou University (ZZU) is the one of key construction on the list of National Project 211, the Midwest Universities Comprehensive Strength Promotion Project and the Co-construction Project jointly-sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the People’s Government of Henan Province. With a total area of about 1,000 acres, ZZU is composed of four campuses, i.e. the main campus (No.100, Kexuedadao, Zhengzhou City), the southern campus (No.75, Daxuebeilu, Zhengzhou City), the northern campus (No. 97, Wenhua Road, Zhengzhou City), and the eastern campus (No. 40, Daxuebeilu, Zhengzhou city). At present, it has an enrollment of over 56,000 full-time undergraduates and 15,000 full-time postgraduates enrolled from all over China as well as 1,600 international students from over 60 countries and regions.
Medical education of ZZU dates back to the National 5th Zhongshan University established in 1928 (the predecessor of National Henan University founded in 1942). This national university moved to Zhengzhou in 1952 and established Henan Medical College (the first batch of its kind authorized to confer doctoral degrees in China) as the forerunner of the higher medical education in Henan province. The former Zhengzhou University, the first comprehensive university established by new China in 1956, was listed under National Project 211 in 1996. Zhengzhou University of Technology, a national key university under the direct leadership of the Ministry of Chemical Industry, was founded in 1963. A large number of distinguished scholars and experts have either taught or worked at this university, including Professor Ji Wenfu, educator, historian and philosopher, Huo Bingquan, physicist professor, Professor Hou Debang, chemist, Zhong Xiangchong, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, expert in refractory, Professor Sun Guoliang, expert in civil engineering, Professor Dong Minsheng, expert in otolaryngology, Professor Shen Qiong, the founder of the esophageal cytology, Professor Su Shouzhi, expert in the human parasitology. On July 10, 2000, the new ZZU was established after the combination of three universities: the former Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou Industrial University and Henan Medical University.
The long history of ZZU has cultivated a distinctive culture of its own. Influenced by the broad and profound culture of the Central Plains of China, people at ZZU have inherited and developed the quality of being generous, inclusive, energetic and daring. Students at ZZU come from over 30 provinces and autonomous regions in mainland China, as well as over 60 overseas countries and regions in the world. It has established 12 major disciplines: science, engineering, medicine, literature, history, philosophy, law, economics, management science, pedagogy, agriculture and arts, among which 6 sub-disciplines are of national key ones, namely the condensed matter physics, material processing engineering, history of ancient China, organic chemistry, chemical technology, pathology and pathophysiology. Besides, 4 disciplines (or fields) have ranked top 1% in ESI ranking across the globe: chemistry, clinical medicine, material science and engineering. There are 21 doctoral programs of first-level disciplines, 3 doctoral programs of independent second-level disciplines, 55 master programs of first-level disciplines, 1 granting unit of doctorate professional degree, 21 granting units of professional master degree, and 24 post-doctoral exchange centers as well.
Four academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science and three more academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering work at ZZU, namely HuoYuping, Wu Yangjie, Shen Changyu, Marty (non-Chinese nationality), Liu Jiongtian, Yang Shengli and Wang Fuming. Five talents are elected into the national “1000-talent Plan”, two talents into the Yangtse River Scholars Program, and 7 talents have acquired the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. At present, Professor He Jilin, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, assumes the presidency of the Resources & Industrial Materials Technology Research Institute of Henan Province. And Professor Nick Lemoine, fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences, serves as Dean of the Academy of Medical Sciences at ZZU. What is more, ZZU has attracted social celebrities to conduct teaching here, such as Nan Zhenzhong, a famous journalist, Zhang Hai, a well-known calligrapher, and Er Yuehe, a distinctive novelist.
The implementation of morality education has required ZZU to shape a self-contained system of talent cultivation.
