In November 2019, ZZU undertook the “33rd China Chemistry Olympics Finals and Winter Camp”, which was a complete success. According to the original plan, the four outstanding contestants selected for the competition will represent China in the “52nd International Chemistry Olympics” held in Istanbul, Turkey. The School of Chemistry of ZZU will send a team leader and observers to participate in the competition with the national team. However, due to the outbreak of the COVID-19, the “52nd International Chemistry Olympics” was temporarily changed to an online competition mode, and participating countries would arrange their own examination venues for the competition. In June of this year, in view of the severe epidemic situation in Beijing, entrusted by the Chinese Chemical Society, the School of Chemistry was ordered to urgently undertake the tasks of the Chinese national team competition and training.

The College of Chemistry attaches great importance to it and immediately organizes backbone forces and arranges training and competition work. For the sake of epidemic prevention and safety, with the approval of the special class of the school’s teaching staff and with the assistance of many departments, four national team players are arranged to live in accommodation on campus. At the same time, the college has organized more than a dozen teaching backbones of various disciplines to prepare lessons urgently to provide contestants with the best pre-competition training. As team leaders and scientific observers, Prof. Song Chuanjun and Associate Prof. Li Kai of the College of Chemistry participated in the training of the national team, translation of examination questions, marking, coordination and grading. The Chemical Experiment Center provides excellent test preparation and competition environment for contestants.

In the end, four contestants from the Chinese team, Gu Yuntian, Li Letian, Sun Haonan, and Zhang Zhuoyang, achieved excellent results and won three golds and one silver medals. Among them, Gu Yuntian won the third place in the world. The organization of ZZU has also been highly recognized by the Chinese Chemical Society and the contestants.
