The New Zealand Embassy in China hosted an educational event attended by Christopher Luxon, New Zealand's prime minister. Li Chengwei, secretary of the Zhengzhou University (ZZU) Party committee, was invited to participate.
During his speech, Luxon emphasized the importance of education in strengthening the enduring relationship between New Zealand and China. He highlighted over 60 approved collaborative programs between universities in the two nations and underscored the significance of student exchanges and joint educational initiatives in enhancing mutual understanding.
Witnessed by Luxon, Li and Nic Smith, president of Victoria University of Wellington, signed a student exchange agreement, marking the start of a new phase in their collaboration. The agreement involves undergraduate and graduate exchange programs and joint research initiatives. The two universities will further collaborate on curriculum development, faculty training, and the cultivation of elite talent.
The deepened partnership between ZZU and Victoria University of Wellington signifies a pivotal step forward in advancing international education and promoting educational openness. The establishment of the Wellington Institute of Zhengzhou University, a joint initiative, is poised to become a prominent hub for China-Zealand higher education cooperation, fostering cultural exchange and the development of exemplary international talent.
Established in 2023, the Wellington Institute is Victoria University of Wellington's first China-based partnership. The joint college, offering dual-degree programs in architecture, landscape design, and industrial design, is a model for transnational education innovation.
