Established on July 10, 2000, Zhengzhou University was formed through the merger of the original Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou University of Technology, and Henan Medical University, creating a comprehensive institution offering a diverse range of disciplines including science, engineering, medicine, humanities, history, philosophy, law, economics, and management.

The original Zhengzhou University, founded in 1956 as the first comprehensive university after the founding of People's Republic of China, underwent significant developments over the years. It was recognized for its academic prowess, eventually being included in the national 211 project for focused development. Prior to the merger, the university had already established itself as a comprehensive institution with a wide array of disciplines including arts, sciences, engineering, finance, and law.

From its founding in 1963 to its merger in 2000, the original Zhengzhou University of Technology, previously known as the Zhengzhou Institute of Technology, evolved into a prominent institution focusing on engineering, with multiple disciplines including arts, sciences, and economics.

Henan Medical University, established in 1928 in Kaifeng and later relocated to Zhengzhou in 1957, had been a key provincial institution specializing in medical education.

The consolidation of these esteemed institutions into Zhengzhou University signifies a coming together of academic strengths, creating a vibrant hub for interdisciplinary collaboration and academic excellence.
