Founded in 2001, the School of Life Sciences at Zhengzhou University is made up of three departments – Biotechnology, Bioengineering, and Bioinformatics (with undergraduate majors in Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, and Plant Science & Technology).
The school has 150 faculty members, including 116 full-time teachers, 27 professors, and 43 associate professors. The distinguished chief professor of biology is Professor Li Peng, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who is also the sitting president of Zhengzhou University.
The school has a postdoctoral research station in biology, a first-level doctoral degree program in Biology, a first-level master's degree program in Biology, and a master's degree program in Biology and Medicine (professional degree). Biology is a first-level key discipline in Henan province and was included in the first batch of advantageous characteristic disciplines in the province.
The school currently has 714 undergraduate students, 677 master's students, 100 doctoral students, and 25 international students. A top talent training class in biology has been established, with international cultivation characteristics.
The school's notable disciplines include Metabolism and Developmental Biology, Molecular Immunity and Biopharmaceuticals, Diversity and Comprehensive Utilization of Animal and Plant Resources.
The school has multiple research platforms including the Henan Province Key Laboratory of Immunobiology and Henan Province Key Laboratory of Functional Biomacromolecules.
In recent years, the school has developed rapidly and achieved outstanding results. It won silver at the 22nd China Patent Awards, while the total cost of patent technology transfer and research and development for the innovative drug ADN-9 for treating liver fibrosis reached 50 million yuan ($6.97 million).
