Founded in 1956, the School of Chemistry at Zhengzhou University has established itself as a prominent national institution and a global leader in chemical sciences. As of March 2024, its Chemistry discipline ranked 54th globally in the ESI database, 22nd in China, and 19th in the ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.

The school currently employs a total of 263 faculty and staff members. Among these, there are 121 individuals holding the titles of professors and associate professors, and three academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The school offers comprehensive undergraduate programs in Chemistry and Applied Chemistry and holds full doctoral and master's degree-granting authority in Chemistry, including a postdoctoral research station. It also offers doctoral degrees in several specialized fields, including Applied Chemistry, Industrial Catalysis, Medicinal Chemistry, Chemical Biology, and Materials & Chemical Engineering, alongside corresponding master's programs in these and related areas such as Environmental Science and Pharmaceutical Analysis.

The school offers about 30,000 square meters of laboratory space and a shared instrumentation platform valued at 150 million yuan ($20.9 million), promoting advanced research. It houses the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Special Functional Molecular Materials and collaborates on the National Key Laboratory for Green Development of Coking Coal Resources. It co-leads the development of Henan's Pingyuan Laboratory.

The school partners with leading Chinese research institutes like the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics and the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry to run the "Lu Jiaxi Chemistry Elite Class", blending education and research to develop top-tier chemistry professionals.

The school has active international partnerships with institutions in the United States, France, Russia, and other countries. It invites top scholars for lectures and promotes student exchange programs to expand global outlooks.

So far, the school has educated more than 10,000 undergraduates, over 4,000 master's students, 400 doctoral candidates, and 200 postdoctoral researchers. Four alumni have become academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering, while one is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
