Founded in 1956, the School of Mathematics and Statistics is one of Zhengzhou University's three founding departments. In its early years, the school's faculty was composed of professors from prestigious institutions such as Peking University, Jilin University, Shandong University, and Wuhan University. Today, it has a faculty and staff of 135 members.

The school currently offers four undergraduate programs: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computational Science, Financial Mathematics, and Statistics. Among these, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics as well as Information and Computational Science are recognized as national-level first-class undergraduate programs, while the remaining two are designated as provincial first-class programs.

The school has developed a robust academic framework that includes a postdoctoral research station in mathematics, first-level doctoral and master's programs in mathematics, a first-level master's program in statistics, a doctoral program in interdisciplinary big data science and technology studies, and a master's program in applied statistics.

In recent years, the school's research achievements have been a standout. The mathematics discipline ranks among the top 1 percent globally in the ESI (Essential Science Indicators). The school has several national and provincial research platforms, including the National Key Laboratory of Tunnel Boring and Intelligent Operation and Maintenance (co-established), the Henan Provincial Key Laboratory of Digital Finance, and the Henan Provincial Innovation Center for Digital Villages.

As a leading base for cultivating advanced talent in mathematics and statistics, the school has produced many distinguished alumni, some of whom have gone on to earn international recognition, including recipients of the Sloan Research Fellowship in the United States.

The school maintains a strong record in employment and postgraduate education. Undergraduate employment rates exceed 80 percent, with more than 50 percent pursuing further studies. Master's graduates have a placement rate of over 90 percent, and doctoral graduates achieve a 100 percent employment rate. Undergraduate students earn over 50 national awards and more than 200 provincial awards annually. Graduate students publish over 30 high-quality papers and win more than 60 national competition awards each year, with several participating in overseas academic exchanges.
