Established in November 2016, Zhengzhou University's School of Calligraphy is the first calligraphy school at a comprehensive university to participate in the national "211 project". Zhang Hai, honorary chairman of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, was appointed as honorary dean of the school in March 2024.
With a dedicated faculty and a comprehensive education system offering bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs in calligraphy, the school houses departments specializing in calligraphy and seal carving, as well as calligraphy theory and education. It boasts a team of professors, associate professors, and doctoral supervisors, ensuring a balanced mix of expertise and experience. Currently, the school enrolls 397 students across its undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
Under the leadership of Zhang, the school has undertaken various national art projects and initiatives, such as talent development programs and art exhibitions. These endeavors have not only enriched academic discourse but also fostered cultural exchanges and collaborations both within and beyond China.
By hosting a series of influential events, such as art forums, training programs, and exhibitions, the school has garnered acclaim and recognition within the academic and artistic communities. Through initiatives like the Second National College Students Calligraphy Seal Cutting Works Exhibition and the Sino-Korean calligraphy exhibition, the school has successfully promoted cultural dialogue and artistic exchange, contributing to the enrichment of art education and research.
