The extravehicular spacesuit recently returned to Earth aboard the Shenzhou XX spacecraft featured a critical component developed by Zhengzhou University (ZZU) — a new-generation helmet visor that served astronauts through approximately 40 hours of spacewalks and multiple missions.

As the "eyes" of the spacesuit, the visor is one of the most vital and delicate safety components. It must provide a clear field of vision while withstanding extreme pressure differentials and temperature fluctuations in outer space.

To meet these rigorous demands, researchers from ZZU's National Engineering Research Center of Rubber and Plastic Mould conducted interdisciplinary studies in materials science, mechanics, and computing. Their work has resulted in a multi-layered visor design that maintains optical clarity, prevents fogging, and filters intense sunlight, allowing astronauts to operate safely in both sunlit and shadowed areas of the space station.

ZZU has now contributed to the development of three generations of helmet visors for China's human spaceflight program. The latest iteration has been successfully tested during long-duration extravehicular activities, supporting China's goal of frequent and extended spacewalks.

Currently, ZZU researchers are conducting further experiments on visor materials exposed to the space environment, focusing on long-term durability, radiation resistance, and atomic oxygen tolerance. The aim is to extend service life and enhance safety for future missions.

By advancing key technologies for China's space program, ZZU demonstrates its commitment to serving major national needs through interdisciplinary research and innovation.
