A research team led by Professor Shi Zhifeng from the School of Physics at Zhengzhou University (ZZU) has made significant progress in developing high-performance pure-red perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The study introduces a multifunctional organic molecule, CF3-BSA, to effectively control the crystallization process, phase distribution, and defect state of quasi-two-dimensional perovskite films. Metal halide perovskite LEDs are promising candidates for next-generation high-resolution displays due to their tunable emission, high color purity, and low-temperature solution processability. However, achieving pure-red emission that meets Rec.2020 standards — while simultaneously delivering high brightness, high efficiency, and long operational stability — has remained a challenge.
The team used CF3-BSA to synergistically interact with organic spacer cations, lead ions, and halide ions during film formation. This approach improved crystal quality and morphology, resulting in uniform phase distribution, reduced defect density, enhanced exciton binding energy, and suppressed halide ion migration.

Using this strategy, the team was able to fabricate pure-red LEDs with emissions at 635 nm, a peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 30.2 percent, a maximum brightness exceeding 25,000 candelas per square meter, and an operational lifetime of 8,426 minutes. The strategy was also successfully applied to large-area devices with a peak EQE of 20.5 percent.
The research offers a promising pathway for valuable material design and device optimization in the development of high-performance, scalable pure-red perovskite LEDs for future high-resolution displays.
